So my iPad, and my iPhone are definitely ready. All the updates have been applied, and a backup has been done. I do the encrypted backup so it backs up more stuff so this means I do an iTunes type backup. Normally, iOS updates seem to be available around 0900 Pacific but not today for me. It was practically lunch time when I was able to update, and on my iPad and not yet on my iPhone.
BTW, if you would like to be reminded what the update is about check out this article. Here is some very good info - now 1Password can autofill in iOS 12. Here is an article about the update Microsoft iOS apps that sounds interesting. A very interesting new feature is creating your own Siri shortcuts and you can learn about that here.
I have both an iPhone 8, and an iPad Pro 10.5 to update and I will let you know how they both go.
I can start by saying the wizard that starts is a little different, at least it looks different, and it told me to close iTunes to do the update. It also said about 1 minute, 17 seconds remaining but said it for like 10 minutes. I did check the screen of the iPad to see if something was waiting for an ACK or whatever. But after about 15 minutes it started actually counting down. I assume this is due to the whole world downloading updates at the same time as me. Then it hung again at 7 seconds. This is so not the normal upgrade process for me! But after 10 or so minutes on 7 seconds it quit. Nothing happened. So back to iTunes and try again. The try again worked better and in fact more like it has in the past. I did not see the new wizard for downloading so it really looked like normal for me. And now twice the download of the update has failed.
And yes, Canada still is not getting Apple News. Very irritated by that. I know we have two languages here but do the main one first and then do the second.
So now I will try updating my iPhone. And it works first try. The upgrade worked good. One odd thing is that I end up with one screen with only one app on it. Nothing lost I don’t think. Some questions about new things like screen time and auto updates I said answer later so quite quick to get back to usable.
So when I tried updating my iPad it failed in the download. So I closed my iTunes, opened it again and started the upgrade again and it worked.
So I have successfully - now - updated both an iPhone and an iPad. But turned out good. I like the changes and improvements I have seen - like how to get the control center on the iPad and the date time in top left on the iPad.
Incidentally, I leave my update iOS devices to now run down to almost zero power so that they have lots of time to re-index as necessary. They run a little hot when they do that. It is good to do this or your battery life may suffer. This may be old ideas but it seems to still matter.
Also, even though I did all the updates on my iPhone and iPad before the update, one had 11 and one had 12 outstanding when the update was done. I guess they were waiting for 12.0.
BTW, as of 9/28/18 - the security info on iOS 12 was updated.
