Newsletter: February 11, 2017

Hello all,

I have spent the last six days in a datacenter trying to build a lab.  It was a greenfield, and that made it a lot harder than I expected.  I have a draft of article on it, and will publish after I have thought on it more.  Certainly I have learned a lot. I need to head back to the work tomorrow morning so need to do a smaller newsletter then normal so I can get it done!

I want to say thanks to Corey Romero and team – I know they work pretty hard on the vExpert program. I am very happy to be part of the vExpert 2017 group.  Most excellent and congrats to all who made it.  You can read more about it here. Anthony has some thoughts on it here.

I had a couple of people who were thinking that storage and vMotion networks (primarily storage) as private and non-routing was a bad thing as it would mean you could not do Veeam Storage backups – which of course are highly desirable.  Since it was two people that was the signal to write about how to do it.  BTW, before I head to HQ to work on building a lab I spent time on my Veeam Content Pack which you can find here.

While I might have lots to share, I am going to try and make this a small newsletter.  We will see.

Have a great week!

Michael

Another recovery from multiple failures in a vSAN stretched cluster
An interesting article about how resilient a VSAN stretched cluster is.  Good background info that should encourage the use of stretched clusters.

How to create a nested ESXi 6.5 template
Here is an article that will show you how to create a nested ESXi template. I am looking for an article that will be more useful for getting started with nested virtualization.  There used to be a number of different things you had to do and I do not know what is necessary currently.

What logs do I get when I enable syslog in VCSA 6.5
This is a good reminder of exactly what is forwarded when you enable syslog forwarding on a 6.5 VCSA.

Log Insight 4.0: New Gauge Chart
I was wondering about this chart type and then I saw Steve’s article on it.  It is a little harder to use then I realized but for good reason.

New Release: PowerCLI 6.5 R1 Poster!
Another very cool poster from VMware – this one on PowerCLI and I love how they provided the print info too!  I love this poster.

Dell OpenManage Integration for VMware vCenter v4 is announced
Thanks to a reader I saw this about a new version of this excellent tool.  I look forward to it and it should not be a long wait.  This is a most excellent tool, and you can see all the articles I have done on it with this tag.

Veeam and VMware NSX – webinar
It is true indeed that NSX can help with networking in a DR situation. IP addresses are one of the most irritating technical problems in DR and NSX provides you will a number of ways to deal with that. Veeam has invited Scott Lowe to talk about NSX and DR and it should be quite interesting. Find out more in this. I quite like Scott and so I am sure this will be a very informative and fun session.

About Mac Laptop batteries
An interesting article that explains quite a number of things – like how many times my battery may charge.

Thanks for reading or skimming this far!

Michael
